Iowa officials predict huge election turnout

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

DES MOINES -State election officials are urging Iowans to expect lines at polling places as 75 percent or more of the state's registered voters are expected to show up.

Secretary of State Michael Mauro says he expects record turnout Tuesday that will mean lines, especially soon after polls open at 7 a.m.

Already, more than 500,000 absentee ballots had been returned, easily breaking the record number submitted four years ago. Nearly half of those early votes came from Democrats, with the remainder split between Republicans and independents.
