Redistribution of Wealth: Is this the answer to our Nation's economic troubles?

A graduate of Eagle Grove High School in 2002, I went on to study political science and public administration at Buena Vista University. I was blessed with a great education that took me to England, France, and Washington D.C. where I experienced the federal bureaucracies that our tax dollars support. As you've heard many times throughout this election cycle, Washington is certainly broken, but the solution is not to give government the authority to take your hard earned money and distribute it to those it feels deserve it more. Government's responsibility is to do for the people what they cannot do for themselves. This does not mean merely handing those who are less fortunate a check every month, patting them on the back, and saying, "good luck". History has shown us that government sponsored redistribution of wealth does not work; it simply kills the drive and hard work ethic of all. Eagle Grove is a prime example of a city that does not solely rely on government to help those in need. Rather, it comes together as a community to rally around those in need.

On November 4th, we will have a major decision to make. Both Barack Obama and John McCain represent change in Washington. The question is change to what? Barack Obama supports the broken federal bureaucracy in Washington D.C. deciding who to "redistribute the wealth" to. John McCain opposes this idea of redistributing wealth. He believes in lower taxes for all and wants to help small businesses survive and thrive during these tough economic times. On its face, a redistribution of wealth may look attractive to some, but in reality it kills the American dream. If we decide to go with this policy, we will no longer be able to tell America's next generation that if you work hard, go to school, and get a good education, you can get a good job and make as much money as you want. The days of telling kids the sky is the limit will unfortunately be over. Our next generation would be allowed to make as much money as they want, they just wouldn't be able to keep the fruits of their labor.

That is why I'll be supporting John McCain. As they say on every commercial these days, "My name is Eric Johansen and I approve this message."

Who is the real Obama?

From JIM TREAT / Storm Lake

Will the real Barack H. Obama please stand up? There was a television show in the 1950's called To Tell the Truth. It consisted of a celebrity panel that quizzed three contestants to find out who the actual person was that was telling the truth. The culminating question was, "Will the real Harry Brown please stand up?" The purpose of the show was to separate truth from fiction.

Who is the real Barack Obama? Has his background been vetted by the liberal media as contrasted by Sarah Palin? Why didn't they investigate his background? He has resisted releasing his birth certificate? Does he have something to hide? He claimed that Bill Ayers was just a person who lived in his neighborhood. However, it is a known fact that he served on several boards with Ayers. Rick Warren of the Saddleback Church asked him when human life begins and he immediately sidestepped the question by stating it was beyond his pay grade. It was quite obvious he did not want to be exposed. His record in the Illinois Senate validates he is pro-abortion and supports the barbaric and ghastly procedure of partial birth abortion.

Obama belittled those people in Pennsylvania who believe in their right to own firearms as guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. He has stated on camera that he supports the 2nd Amendment. If that is the case, why would he be in favor of licensing guns? Licensing always precedes confiscation. History records the person who wrote the Third Reich licensed guns and used the records to confiscate those guns so his subjects could not defend themselves. Stalin used the same procedure. Obama opposes state Right to Carry laws. He supported a 500% increase in the excise tax on firearms and ammunition and supported lawsuits against firearm manufacturers. He favors banning the sale of all handguns. And cast a vote in the U.S. Senate to ban practically all centerfire rifle ammunition used for hunting. He voted twice in the Illinois Senate to allow the prosecution of people who use handguns in self-defense. Do you think he would be supported by the anti-gunners such as Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, Diane Feinstein, Barney Frank and Joe Biden if he was not anti-gun. The truth is Obama is no friend of gun owners. His voting record in the Illinois and U.S. Senate will attest to that.

Barack H. Obama voted "present" in the U.S. Senate 133 times? It is quite evident that he did not want to leave a long paper trail by which people could judge his integrity. It appears that he had the presidency in mind when making those decisions.

Martin Luther King said that he longed for the day that people would be judged by their character and not by the color of their skin. Can the character of a person also be judged by the infamous characters with whom he associates? Why would a person want to rub shoulders with those who are adamantly anti-American? Could it be that he shares some of their ideology? I doubt that he has ever tried to convince them the United States is the greatest country on earth.

The dominant fact is Barack Obama has not been honest, factual, trustworthy or forthright with us in his answers to far too many questions. He is an intelligent person, a good orator, but his rhetoric has been laced with "snake oil." Is he worthy of the highest office in the land? I think not.

Go to the polls on Tuesday, November 4th and vote for your 1st and 2nd Amendment rights. Don't be fooled, we have politicians and their supporters in this country who would like to take those rights away. If we want the country to continue being the "Home of the Brave and the Land of the Free," we must be willing to fight for it. The trumpet of freedom must never sound retreat.

Let a smile be your election day umbrella

Thanks for allowing me some space in the "Pilot." This, from an old newspaper clipping, words of Confusius, the Chinese teacher and philosopher, who said, "He who slings mud loses ground." Let's hope the political candidates heed his words.

May I wish you all a Happy Halloween October 31 and All Souls Day November 1. Then comes November 4, election day. Lets all of us do our best and take time out to pray and then go vote! Even if the weather is cold and rainy, let a smile be your umbrella.
