STORM LAKE - Playing in extreme windy conditions on Sunday afternoon, the Buena Vista men's soccer team got goals from Derek O'Grady (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and Jared Archer (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake), but Gustavus Adolphus also turned in a pair of second-half goals to top the Beavers, 3-2. The game was the final home one for BVU this season.
Gustavus went in front in the seventh minute to capture the game's only score of the first half.
O'Grady then tied the game two minutes into the second half with his eighth goal of the season, tying the BVU freshman record. But the Gusties stormed right back just 16 seconds later to regain the 2-1 lead. After another Gustavus goal late in the 66th minute put the team up 3-1, Archer took a feed from Ross Stott (Oakland, Iowa/Riverside) for his his first goal of the season at the 84:27 mark, pulling BVU to within a goal, but the team couldn't find the back of the net again before time expired.
O'Grady finished with a team-high three shots, while Zach Robertson (Louisburg, Kan./Blue Valley West) and Cody Johnson (Council Bluffs , Iowa /Thomas Jefferson) followed with two.
Marcus Nielsen (Humboldt, Iowa/Humboldt) got his first career start in-goal for BVU and went the first 54:35 of the contest, allowing two goals and picking up four saves. Dustin Dobbels (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) then closed things out, while also tallying three saves.
BVU dips to 1-16 overall and will close out its season next Sunday, November 2, with a 3:00 p.m. match at Coe College.
