From a children's Halloween parade and Little Spooks funhouse to pumpkin recipes and karaoke costume contests for the big boys and ghouls, Aurelia has been the area's Halloween City for a decade.
The city is home to the Haunted Bates Motel, an attraction in itself, but the real celebration comes at the Harvest Hoopla, celebrating its tenth anniversary of delighting kids and adults alike. This year's event is set for Saturday, Oct. 25.
In celebration of the Hoopla and the opening day of pheasant hunting season, a pancake breakfast will be held at the new Aurelia Community Center, located on Main Street, from 6 a.m. to noon. A free will donation will be taken with proceeds going to the Aurelia School DARE program for drug awarenes.. The event is sponsored by the Aurelia Kiwanis, Aurelia Commercial Club and DARE program. Everyone is invited to attend.
The Aurelia Library, directly across the street form the Community Center, will be having a book/video/magazine sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Friends of Aurelia women's club will sponsor the Little Spooks of Fun from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Aurelia Community Center. There will be several activities for children to take part in. Recommended for kids fifth grade and under. Costumes are optional.
Have a tasty pumpkin recipe? Enter it in the Pumpkin Recipe Contest. Prizes of $10 will be awarded for dishes entered in these categories: Most Unusual, Best Appetizer, Best Main Dish, Best Dessert. Bring prepared entries, forms (available at Heritage Bank and First Trust Bank in Aurelia, the library, city hall or downtown businesses) to the Aurelia Community Center by 3:30 p.m. Judging will take place at 4 p.m. and winners will be announced at 5:30 p.m. at the Haunted Bates Motel.
A kiddy costume parade will take place at 5 p.m. - starting at the city park and ending downtown. All kids participating will receive a goody bag.
A karaoke and costume contest will be held at Sandy's, downtown Aurelia. Music by Ken G and the Turbines from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes.
Jakes, downtown Aurelia, will host a DJ and costume contest on Halloween from 9:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes.
