STORM LAKE - BVU trailed just 1-0 at the half, but couldn't quite mount the comeback on Saturday during its 3-1 loss to Dubuque.
Cody Self's first half goal gave the Spartans the 1-0 lead heading into the break. Dubuque then added two more insurance goals over the final 45 minutes to secure the win.
"I thought the guys played quite well for big chunks of the game," said head coach Scott Phipps. "We gave up a goal in the last minute of the first half that really hurt us. We made a few mistakes in our defensive third, and to Dubuque's credit, they executed well when they were given opportunities."
Ben Welch turned in BVU's lone goal, while finishing with two shots. Braden Studelska led with five shots, as Zach Robertson turned in three.
"I am very pleased with how the lads have dealt with the struggles of this year and the burden of losing," Phipps added. "We understood this was a building year, but it still makes my heart hurt to see these guys work so hard and not get a result. I want it more for them than myself. We will now just look forward to our game on Wednesday, and prepare to get a result.
BVU will travel to Luther College on Wednesday night for a 5:00 p.m. match.
