The Buena Vista volleyball team returns to Iowa Conference action on Tuesday night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse against Wartburg College (6-10, 1-1 IIAC).
The Beavers (5-13, 1-2 IIAC) just completed the tough two-day Central College Tournament this past Friday and Saturday in Pella. BVU went 0-4, including a tough 3-2 setback against UW-River Falls, while also pushing unbeaten Carthage College (12-0) to four sets.
For the tournament, sophomore Katie Vondrak led the way with 48 kills, including 20 against River Falls. Senior Molly Reuter, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, chipped in with 121 assists. Defensively, BVU tallied 36.5 total team blocks, including 14 in its opening match against St. Olaf. Cara Kreman also posted a career-best 35 digs against Carthage.
For the year, BVU is averaging 10.34 kills per set, including a team-leading 3.86 from Vondrak, who also ranks second in the Iowa Conference. Reuter is averaging 5.51 assists per set and has totaled 551 for the year. Defensively, Vondrak has registered 48 total blocks, as Kreman leads the way with her 253 digs.
The Knights come in following a thrilling 3-2 IIAC victory over Cornell College last Wednesday. In that match, Kelsey Steffens finished with a team-leading 17 kills as Lindsay Schneider was right behind with 15. Britney Hermsen dished out 36 assists as Channing Merchant added six ace serves.
The team's 18.52 digs per set is tops in the conference this season. Schneider ranks ninth in kills per set, averaging 2.71, as Merchant is tops in the league in digs per set (6.27).
Buena is 1-2 in league play so far this season with its win being a 3-0 victory at the University of Dubuque. Wartburg took last season's meeting with BVU, 3-0, in Waverly.
The junior varsity match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., with the varsity contest to follow at 7:30 p.m.
