The Galva-Holstein Pirates hosted their volleyball classic Saturday and they looked very impressive throughout the tournament. The Pirates didn't lose a single game until the finals where they fell to East Sac County 25-15, 25-9.
In pool play, the Pirates took down Battle Creek-Ida Grove ( 21-17, 21-11), West Monona ( 21-14, 21-6), and Ar-We-Va ( 21-11, 21-11) to advance to the semifinals.
There they met Woodbury Central who they swept in two straight games, 25-21 and 25-13, before falling to the eventual champions.
Heather Joslin and Brandi Wagoner were both recognized for their outstanding play in the tournament as the outside hitter and middle hitter were selected to the all-tournament team.
Wagoner had 14 kills in Saturday's action to go along with seven of the team's twenty blocks. Joslin had 30 kills in the tournament as well as 14 digs. Lanae Broesder totaled 76 assists during the tournament.
"We played pretty consistently throughout the day," said Galva-Holstein head coach Scott Mitchell. "East Sac really took it to us in the finals. We couldn't get a ball down against them. I thought we looked a little fatigued, which means we need to improve in the area of conditioning."
Following Saturday's action, the Pirates are now 5-1 on the season. They will take the court again Thursday as they play host to River Valley at 6 PM.
