City speed ordinance adopted on final reading

Thursday, September 4, 2008

With no reported comments or complaints, the speed limit on a portion of Flindt Drive and Milwaukee Avenue will be changed as a result of a new ordinance that passed the final reading, Tuesday during the Storm Lake City Council meeting.

In June, the City received a letter from the Iowa Department of Transportation in regards to a study that was conducted on the road. It was recommended to the City that a change be made to improve consistency on the road and improve traffic safety. They suggested that the portion of road from Richland Drive to Geneseo Street be set at 30 mph. Currently the speed within the area fluctuates between 25 mph near Lake Avenue to 35 mph further East to Lakeshore Drive.

Earlier this summer the Traffic Safety Team reviewed the request and supported the new change. Public Safety Director Mark Prosser noted in an earlier Council meeting he didn't feel too concerned about adjustments. According to Prosser the DOT will be in charge of new signage.
