Scarecrow contest returns for Storm Lake autumn event

Thursday, August 14, 2008

Storm Lake's Annual Customer Appreciation Night is set for Sept. 18. Local business owners will provide free pork sandwiches to their customers while saying "thanks" for shopping Storm Lake. Coke products will also be provided and served by the Storm Lake Ambassadors. Citizens Bank will serve free ice cream for dessert. Serving starts at 6 p.m. and will continue until the food is gone.

The Fall Festival has been a big hit for the past couple of years. Back by popular demand will be the fall scarecrows greeting the customers on the sidewalks outside of participating stores. These "Sidewalk Sitters" will be on display from Sept. 13 - 27. Judging and prized are sponsored by the Storm Lake Pilot Tribune. Many organizations will be represented including the City of Storm Lake's Fire and Police Department who will be setting up their fire trucks, mobile command center and other equipment.

St Mary's School and Witter Gallery will also have scarecrows in the non-profit division. There will be a live KAYL scarecrow to greet customers on the sidewalks downtown. These clever scarecrows will be a big hit for young and old alike as there will be comical themes and crazy outfits. Mr. Pumpkin will be available for photos, sponsored by Heritage Bank.

Treats will be available, so bring the kids and enjoy the evening! Many businesses on North Lake Avenue are also planning the customer appreciation cook-outs.

The Witter Gallery will host a pumpkin cookie decorating table in front of Floors, Etc. and Hoffman's Flower and Candle Shop. Children 10 and under may decorate their cookies free of charge.

A Pumpkin Patch will have pumpkins for sale. "Many of our local retail businesses appreciate the loyal customers they see all year round and are planning to thank them by being involved in this annual event," says Chamber Director, Marilyn Monson.
