The St Mary's 8th Grade Softball team swept the August 9th Marcus tournament for a first place finish. The Panthers beat BCIG 13-5, Remsen Union, 6-0, and Marcus Meriden Cleghorn 7-6 on their way to taking home top honors.
In the first game, BCIG's pitchers gave up 16 walks accounting for the majority of the Panther runs while five Panther hitters had one hit each as they easily cruised to victory.
Mandy Wolver led the way for the St. Mary's offensively as she scored three runs. Mary Timko, Paige Carlson and Wendy Broich each scored two.
Wolver also picked up the win on the mound for St. Mary's as she gave up only one earned run, three hits, struck out two, and walked none.
In the second game, Timko and Carlson collected two hits apiece to lead the way against Remsen Union. Holly Keenan was lights-out as she gave up no runs on four hits, no walks, and stuck out seven on her way to collecting the win.
The game with MMC was the Panthers' only real test in the tournament. Timko was 2-3 with a triple. Wolver was 2-2 with two doubles and a sacrifice bunt. Maddie Laven and Ashley Lullmann both collected two hits as well. Wolver picked up her second win of the tourney as she struck out six and walked none in relief. smine Demers was the starting pitcher going one inning and giving up 6 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
The Panthers trailed 6-2 at one point in the championship, but they rallied to score the last five runs of the game to pick up the victory and tournament title.
