Quilting champ Besch kicks off new series on young local artists

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

The Storm Lake Area Arts Council and the Pilot-Tribune are showcasing talented and gifted young artists from the Storm Lake area during the remainder of 2008.

"We will feature students who participate in all forms of fine art, including music, dance, artists and other genres," says Sherise Gibson of the Arts Council.

This week's featured artist is Mary Jo Besch. Daughter of Keven and Jodi Besch of Storm Lake, Mary Jo won the grand champion ribbon this year at the Buena Vista County Fair with her quilting talents. She is 14 years old and was first taught this craft by her grandmother, Mary Besch, who has made hundred of gorgeous quilts over the years.

"Mary Jo has made various other textile items, including fish towel bags that are just darling, but her quilts are the most impressive," Gibson said. "This was her first year of competition and I am sure we will see her exhibiting more in the future. Mary Jo is also an avid basketball player and has broken records in track at the Storm Lake Middle school. When she isn't in her Grandmother's sewing room making quilts, she spends her time doing family related activities, reading and hanging out with her friends."
