Alta High School grad named Executive Officer of the U.S. Naval Academy

Major Bradly Phillips, son of Steve and Peggy Phillips, Kernerville, N.C. and Debra Wade, Denver, Colo., and grandson of Doloris and W.L. (Bud) Phillips, was recently assigned as the Executive Officer of the United States Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I.

Major Phillips was born 12 July 1970 in Storm Lake. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Sept. 19, 1988, following graduation from Alta High School. Upon completion of recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton he was given the MOS 0311. He then attended the Marine Corps Security Forces School at Naval Station Mare Island and upon graduation was assigned his first duty station aboard the USS Long Beach (CGN-9). After an 18-month sea duty tour, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines and was then assigned to the Camp Lejeune School of Infantry as an Instructor at Marine Combat Training Battalion.

Upon completion of his initial enlistment obligation, he enrolled full-time at Iowa State University. In 1996 he graduated from Iowa State with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. He subsequently was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Upon graduation of The Basic School and Air Support Control Officer's School, where he was the distinguished Honor graduate, he received a direct-duty assignment to Marine Air Support Squadron - 1, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, where he served as a Senior Air Director and Assistant Direct Air Support Center Officer.

In 2001, Capt Phillips was assigned to U.S. Space Command, Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center (CMOC), Colorado Springs, CO where he served as the CMOC Exercise Branch Chief and a Missile Warning Center Commander. He provided direct missile, space, and air support to Operations NOBLE EAGLE, ENDURING FREEDOM, and IRAQI FREEDOM. During his tour with CMOC he attended the U.S. Air Force Missile Warning Center School and U.S. Army's Space Operations Officer Qualification Course, where he was the distinguished honor graduate.

In 2004, he transferred to Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 28 (MTACS-28), 2d Marine Aircraft Wing. His duties included Tactical Air Command Center (TACC) Officer In Charge (OIC), Assistant Operations Officer, and Remain Behind Element OIC.

Captain Phillips, while assigned to MTACS-28 graduated from the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course. Major Phillips deployed to Iraq twice with the TACC in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, once in 2005 and again in 2007.

Major Phillips, after graduating from Marine Corps Command and Staff College, Quantico, Va., in 2008 assumed his current duties as Executive Officer, Naval Academy Prep School.

Major Phillips holds a Master's of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and Master's of Military Studies from Marine Corps Command and Staff College.

His personal military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and Navy Achievement Medal (second award).
