The best of the showring

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Overall Showmanship at the Buena Vista county Fair is the opportunity for senior 4-H members who placed first in showmanship in their respective division of each of the four species: beef, horse, sheep, and swine. Each of these 4-H'ers then compete with each other in the overall showmanship competition.

Judging was done according to the exhibitor's appearance, attitude, and interest, the animal's condition, cleanliness, and grooming, and the presentation, response to direction, and use of necessary equipment. Participants were also asked questions about each of the species of animals and were judged according to their responses.

The 2008 Senior Showmanship winners from each of the species were:

John Eddie, Providence Go-Getters - Swine

Katie Christensen, Fairfield Pioneers and B.V. Equine Team - Horse

Stephanie Peterson, MVA - Sheep

Leslie Murphy, B.V. Equine Team - Beef

It was quite the competition this year. Leslie Murphy was presented with the "traveling" trophy, which will include a name plate with her name on it. If Leslie is able to win the trophy three years in a row, she then will be able to keep it.

Junior and intermediate winners were also selected as top showmen for these four livestock groups as well as in the dog, rabbit and chicken shows. These 4-H'ers should be honored with this accomplishment.
