Still time to prepare for first SL half-marathon

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Have you always wanted to run a marathon but can't find the time to train? Break into running with Storm Lake's Jump Right In and Run half-marathon on Sunday, August 31! This 13.1 mile run will begin and end at King's Pointe Resort, allowing beautiful views of Storm Lake along the way. Post-race, enjoy refreshments and entertainment to help you cool down.

Even if you're a beginner, it's not too late to start training. All ages and fitness levels are invited to participate in the run. If you're not quite ready to tackle 13.1 miles, grab a buddy and do the half-marathon relay (6.1 and 7 mile runs). There's also a 5K run/walk for those wanting a shorter workout. Start time for all three races is 7:30 a.m.

If you haven't jumped on the running "bandwagon" yet, give it a try! Running is easy and cheap, no need for expensive equipment or fancy gear. Grab a pair of shoes and you're all set.

Want to shed some extra pounds? A 140-pound person burns approximately 100 calories per mile while running. Because running also builds muscle mass, your resting metabolism will increase, which means you'll burn more calories when inactive.

Need more incentives? The health benefits of running are numerous and include improved cardiovascular health, improved bone health, better coordination and improved mood. Running is a great aerobic exercise for physical conditioning of your heart and lungs. In addition to the energy boost, most runners report being happier and feeling less stressed than those who do not exercise regularly. For more information, see www.stormlakerunningclub.com.
