Marion Sjoberg

Feb. 13, 1920 - July 7, 2008

Marion Sjoberg, age 88 of Channelview, Texas and formerly of Alta, passed away on July 7, 2008.

Services were held on Saturday, July 12 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church of Alta with Rev. D. Duane Olson officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church. She was buried in the Scandinavian Cemetery of Alta.

Marion Sjoberg was born on Feb. 13, 1920 in Alta. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Tekla Bergquist and her brother Eldon Bergquist.

Survivors include her husband Merlin Sjoberg; daughter Karen Blackshear and husband Joe; sons Charles Kraemer and wife Helene, and David Kraemer and fiancé Deb French; brothers Gorden Bergquist and wife Rosemary, and Roy Bergquist; sister Beverly Hinkeldey; nine grandchildren, Angie Kelley and husband Mark, Jennifer Casey and husband Rickey, Amy Loftton, Gye Kraemer and wife Christene, Billie Gibson and husband Jason, Jessie Kraemer, Cory Kraemer, Brent Kraemer and Aaron Kraemer; seven great-grandchildren, Stephen Casey and wife Maria, Scott Casey, Kalyn Casey, Kimberly Kelley, Morgan Kelley, Conner Lofton and Charlee Gibson; two great-great grandchildren Aidan and Ava Casey.

Alan Engebretson

Alan Engebretson, age 71, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, July 21, 2008 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. Funeral services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Russel Hicks

April 6, 1914 - July 20, 2008

Russell Hicks, age 94, of Sac City, Iowa, formerly of Nemaha, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2008 at his home in Sac City.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 23, at the United Methodist Church in Nemaha, Iowa. Burial will be at the Nemaha Cemetery with military graveside rites by the V.F.W. Post No. 590 and American Legion Cantigny Post No. 195 of Sac City. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.

Russell was born on April 6, 1914 near Nemaha, Iowa, the son of Charles and Edna (Mooney) Hicks. He graduated from Delaware Township Consolidated School at Nemaha in 1932 and then earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Buena Vista College. From 1937 to 1942 Russell taught high school math and science classes and coached baseball and basketball at Ellsworth and Dike.

In June 1942 Russell enlisted in the Navy and had extended duty in the South and West Pacific. After his discharge as a Lieutenant (S.G.) in February 1946, he began farming west of Nemaha.

Russell married Zelma Richardson in Storm Lake, Iowa, in January of 1948. Two children were born to this union, Charles and Jan Kay. In 1965 he was appointed Sac County Assessor and served through 1985. After a long illness, Zelma died in July 1975. He married Lona Coats May 14, 1983. They made their home in Sac City.

Russell was a 75-year member of the Nemaha Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Shriner's, Lions Club, Farm Bureau, Iowa Assessors Association, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had served on the Nemaha School Board for many years, was a 4-H Leader and taught Sunday school.

He took pleasure in bowling, golfing, woodworking, and repairing bicycles for the Lions Christmas gifts for kids.

Survivors include his wife Lona; son Charles Hicks and wife Marjorie of Sarasota, Florida; daughter Jan K. Gustafson and husband Larry of Clear Lake, Iowa; step-children: Betty Shull of Sac City and William (Carla) Coats of Carroll; four grandchildren: Monica (Dave) Byrd and Maria Hicks, both of Chicago, Illinois and Dan (Karisa) Gustafson and Seth Gustafson, both of Clear Lake; six step grandchildren: Jerrod Shull, Eric (Melissa) Shull, and Gavin Shull all of Sac City, Allison (Phil) Jarquio of Warner-Robbins, Georgia, and Jill Coats and Bert Coats of Las Vegas, Nevada; great-granddaughter Gabriella Gustafson; step great-grandchildren: Phillip, Sabastian, and Vincent Jarquio, Elizabeth and Sarah Shull, Kyle and Victoria Shull, and Gage and Tarissa Shull; his sister Kathryn Parks of Early, Iowa; and extended family members.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; wife Zelma; brother Theodore "Milt" Hicks and sister Arlene Coats.

Margery Johnson

Sept. 27, 1943 - July 19, 2008

Margery Johnson, 64, of Sioux Rapids died on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at her residence in Sioux Rapids. Memorial Services were held July 23, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church of Sioux Rapids in Sioux Rapids.

Margery Kay Van Zee, the daughter of Edison and Audrey (Amos) Van Zee was born at Lacona, Iowa, on September 27, 1943. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith at the Lacona United Methodist Church. Marge was a 1961 graduate of the Southeast Warren High School.

Marge was united in marriage to William Johnson on June 1, 1976, at Omaha, Nebraska, and this couple was blessed with two children: Jyl and Cale. Following their marriage, Bill and Marge resided at Des Moines and Armstrong, Iowa, before coming to make their home in Sioux Rapids in 1986. During the time that they have lived in Sioux Rapids, Marge has operated her own housecleaning business.

Marge's special interests included golfing, decorating, flowers and feeding the birds. She thoroughly enjoyed the times she shared with her many friends and especially with her family. Marge was a member of several businesswomen clubs including the "Chicks" and the BPW Club, of which she had been treasurer.

Those who will always love and cherish her memory include her husband of 32 years, Bill, of Sioux Rapids; her children: Jyl and Chad DeJong of Knoxville, Iowa and Cale Johnson of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; her three grandchildren: Luka, Kolton, and Brody DeJong, all of Knoxville,Iowa; her three brothers: Marvin and Judy Van Zee of Salem, Oregon; Melvin Van Zee of Des Moines, Iowa; and Gerald Van Zee of Clive, Iowa; her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Larry Reams of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other relatives and a host of friends.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents.

May the blessed memory of Margery Kay Johnson continue to be lived out through her family and friends.

Dale B. Larsen

Dale B. Larsen, age 87, of Spencer, Iowa, died on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa. Memorial Services for Mr. Larsen will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.

Inurnment with full military rites will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Lone Tree Cemetery at Sioux Rapids. No visitation is scheduled. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
