Alta has been blessed with two new pastors, and their families, who are now living in the community and sharing their faith.
Pastor Kevin Lewis is serving at Church of Christ and Pastor John Schmidt is serving at St. John Lutheran in Hanover.
Pastor Lewis grew up in York, Neb. He is the third generation pastor on his father's side of the family; his father is retiring this year after being in the ministry for 50 years and his grandfather served about the same number of years. He is proud to be following their footsteps.
He and wife Glenda have a son, Elijah, 2, and are expecting their second son in September.
Pastor Lewis attended and graduated from York College. He lived in Washington where he served as an associate pastor for three years, gaining a great deal of knowledge from the other pastors he worked with. For the past seven years, the couple has lived in Colorado where he helped a developmentally disabled friend, served as a supervisor for Office Max and was greatly involved with the church, gaining additional spirituality from the pastors of the church.
"We love Alta. It's quaint, the yards are cute and the people are friendly," Pastor Lewis said. "We are excited to live in a town where the pace of life is not as urban and hectic and we can stop and enjoy life with other believers."
Pastor Lewis is greatly looking forward to serving as a head pastor and serving at Church of Christ.
"I'd like to strengthen those (people) that are here and make sure they are strong and healthy in the Lord. We have a good ministerial group in the community and I'd like to see us continue to build friendships and support in the other congregations so we can comfort each other."
Pastor Schmidt was raised in Victor. He worked for Hartwig Motors of Iowa City and Kinze Manufacturing of Williamsburg for several years before attending college.
He graduated from Concordia College, Ann Arbor, in 1982 with a B.A. in Biblical languages. He attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis for one year and transferred to Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne. Pastor Schmidt served a vicarage year at Christ Lutheran Church of Lincoln, Neb. and completed his seminary at Ft. Wayne.
He accepted a call to be pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cambridge, Neb. and was ordained in 1986.
In 1990 he accepted a call to be pastor at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of Nebraska City. In February 2001 he accepted a call to be associate pastor at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and School in Racine, Wisc. In February, he accepted the call to be pastor at St. John.
He and wife Karen have four sons - Joel, 20, a student at Concordia Lutheran College in Seward, Neb.; Paul, 18, will be a senior at Alta High School; David, 14, will be a freshman at Alta High School; and Mark, 11, will attend school at Concordia in Storm Lake.
He is looking forward to coming to know the some 325 members of St. John and helping them strengthen their faith.
Welcome to these two families!
