Friends and family of Alex Hermstad have organized a walk to raise money to pay for ongoing medical care for her. The group is called Alex's Army and will be walking not only to raise money, but also to raise awareness of Alex's condition in the hope that someone will help find a cure for the disease that has afflicted this young girl.
The walks is Saturday, July 5, 10 a.m.; walkers will gather at 9:15 a.m. at Sunset Park. They will proceed to King's Pointe and return to Sunset Park.
(In case of rain, a lunch and raffle will take place at the Storm Lake Middle School commons at noon.)
A hog roast picnic/lunch and raffle will follow the walk.
Anyone interested in registering for the walk should contact Mike Hadden (Alex's uncle). T-shirts will be available for walkers before June 26. Registration is $25 for adults, which includes the entry fee for the walk, t-shirt, and lunch. $15 for kids under 15 for the walk, t-shirt and lunch. Alex first started having trouble with movement of her left arm in spring of 2005. She was a healthy young girl at the time who enjoyed playing softball, riding horses, and playing with her friends. In March 2005, Alex noticed that she was having difficulty moving her left arm. After numerous doctors and several diagnoses, the paralysis continued and in December 2005, Alex lost the ability to walk. Alex had a tracheotomy-ventilator and G-tube inserted to help her breathe. She has lost the ability to speak and she can no longer swallow. She continues to battle this unknown illness every day and by joining Alex's Army and her courageous crusade, you can help her in this fight.
