Take charge

From Sherise Gibson / Storm Lake

I have been called a Piss Ant many times in my life. If you are wondering what a piss ant is , it is a small, irritating , barely noticeable insect that you don't see, but once it gets under your skin, eventually pisses you off. I have heard people comment, oh no, she has written another article, who does she think she is anyway?

I am an American citizen who cares about where I live and how I live. I believe we create our own destiny and I write and voice opinions about things that some people only think about, too afraid to speak it out loud. Why? Because they are afraid of offending others, or they are afraid of being labeled a racist, trouble maker or afraid to be an outcast among their peers for not keeping their silence. I write because I believe that a voice needs to be heard and questions need to be asked, and thoughts need to be addressed. I am not asking people to agree with me, I write so people can educate themselves and to think for themselves.

I can't just sit back and let others dictate how my life should be. I speak out loud so others have the opportunity to talk to among their friends about what they read and if they agree or disagree. At least people are thinking about issues and discussing them when they read something I have written.

This week I would like to share a little history lesson on what's what and it doesn't matter whether you are Democrat of Republican. Facts are Facts!

It has to do with our Social Security. Franklin Roosevelt introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised that participation in the program would be completely voluntary. He proposed that the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the program. The money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year. The money the participants put into the independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other government program and that the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month - and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put away' - you may be interested in the following:

The Democrats took Social Security from the independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it. It was Lyndon Johnson and the democrat controlled House and Senate.

The Democrats eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding & started taxing Social Security annuities. And they decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants. That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democrat Party decided immigrants who have moved into this country, and at age 65, could began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it! AND TO ADD INJURY TO INSULT THE CONGRESS GIVES THEMSELVES 100% RETIREMENT FOR ONLY SERVING ONE TERM!

My question is when is enough, enough? When do we start saying "No" and start thinking of ourselves. My oldest daughter told me, if you were on a plane and it was going down, if you don't put on your air mask first and take care of yourself first, how can you be around to take care of others? When are we going to put on our air mask and start thinking of ourselves? Can't people see we are drowning and there is no life jacket to be thrown? If we don't acknowledge that there is a need for one in the first place, we won't have enough to save any of us from our future. We need to take control of our lives and hold our government and our local officials responsible for their actions. Thomas Jefferson once said: A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.
