Youth life jacket law in effect

Thursday, May 29, 2008

The new Iowa mandatory life jacket for youth law went into effect May 10, reminds Buena Vista County Recorder Shari O'Bannon, and is already being enforced by law enforcement.

According to the legislation passed by Iowa lawmakers this past session, "A person shall not operate a vessel in Iowa unless every person on board the vessel who is age 12 and under is wearing a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket."

A life jacket must be work when the vessel is in operation - any time it is not aground, at anchor, or tied off to a dock or shore.
