Accused murderers want bail reduced

Thursday, May 22, 2008

Three man being held in Dickinson County Jail awaiting trail in the beating death of a young man outside a Milford "Gentelemen's Club" earlier this spring have pleaded with a judge this week to reduce their bail.

John Allen Swan, 30, of Crossett, Ark.; Scott Thomas Adair, 29, of Crossett, Ark.; and Michael James Friedrichs, 29, of Forest City now face $750,000 bond - an amount their attorneys claims is excessive.

The local prosecutor argues that the nature of the crime and the men's records make it appropriate to have the bail set as it is. The judge has indicated that a decision will be soon forthcoming.

All three are charged with the first-degree murder of Matthew Thomas Begtrup, 25, of Sioux Falls on April 4th outside the Zippers club. All three of the accused have pleaded not guilty.

They told Judge Patrick Carr the lower bail would help them assist in their own defense and help them support their families. Swan's mother took the stand to say that he has two children to support, and has custody of a 10-year-old son.

The three suspects had reportedly come to the area for employment working on wind turbine developments.
