When some think of Genesis Development of Storm Lake, they may just think can and bottle redemption. However, behind the scenes members of the Work Services department are working on other business ventures.
One such business venture has been printing rain gauges and now they have goals of expanding their current business and the prospect they say is something they are excited about.
In 2007, they purchased printing equipment from Silk Screen Ink of Storm Lake. Genesis now does promotional rain gauge printing work under a contract for American Identity who was bought out by Staples. They also assemble, package and ship the gauges.
However, before they can grow, the business staff at Genesis said they first must consolidate the business to become more efficient.
"We would like to move it all to one central area and increase efficifiency," said Cindy Wiemold, site director for Genesis "It's going to provide a smoother and more efficient operation for them (the workers.) It will allow us to grow and expand and ultimately provide more job training for the people that we serve -that's what it's all about."
According to Wiemold, the cost for remodeling and some new equipment will be about $30,000. Since this is their biggest project yet, they kicked off their first capital campaign for the business. They've already raised over $15,000 from donors. Wiemold said this business venture has been one that the challenged clients they serve appreciate working on.
"It's work the people feel very proud about. To give them that pride in their workmanship, that's the great thing."
Genesis staff say the operation allows people to grow in their self-esteem, have a sense of belonging and have a business that will grow as they grow.
Genesis currently prints about 2,000 promotional gauges a day. The business has shipped gauges across the country and Canada. With this current business venture they hope to be able to grow their business into printing other promotional materials as well with their printing machines. "We can do more than just rain gauges with these printers," said Dale Carver, Genesis Development Business Development Manager. Wiemold said by consolidating the operations into one area would also allow them to add equipment and more job stations. They also hope with the improvements they'll also be able to begin printing other promotional products.
In 2003, American Identity, which was later bought out by Staples and Silk Screen Ink of Storm Lake formed a business partnership for the printing of rain gauges. In December 2003 Genesis and AI entered into the business agreement together, Genesis assembled and packaged the gauges. The three-way partnership between AI, Silk Screen and Genesis continued until 2006.
Silk Sceen then asked Genesis if they'd like to take over the printing. In December 2007, Genesis purchased the printing equipment .
