After absorbing a bombing a the hands of Simpson batters last night, Buena Vista University baseball has its work cut out in the final games of the regular season later this week.
BVU must win at least two of three from Loras in order to keep hopes alive for back-to-back trips to the Iowa Conference Tournament for the first time since 2002-03.
In Wednesday night's game, BVU's Steve Johnston went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, and two runs scored, but it wasn't enough.
Simpson took control early on with three runs in the first and five more in the fourth to grab an 8-0 lead. BVU scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth on Johnston's solo home run, but the Storm came right back with a run in the fifth.
Simpson later added its final run in the seventh before the Beavers took advantage of three Simpson errors to plate a pair of runs in the eighth.
Aside from Johnston, Jeff Weisenborn finished 2-for-5 and was the only other Beaver to record multiple hits. Christian Dekker suffered the loss for BVU, going the first 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on just three hits, while striking out five.
Buena Vista falls to 16-15 overall (7-10 IIAC).
The Beavers face Loras Friday at 6 p,m., then host a Saturday double-header at 1 p.m. - all at the St. Mary's field at Memorial Park.
The conference tourney begins May 8 in Cedar Rapids.
