Storm Lake

On April 21, the Storm Lake golf teams headed to Emmetsburg for a showdown with Sheldon and Emmetsburg, which resulted in a second place finish for the boys and third place for the girls.

On the boys' side, Storm Lake's Tyler Gibbins was the varsity medalist with a 39. His three-over-par finish topped Emmetsburg's runner-up, Ben McCain, by one stroke. Paul Diehl had the second best Tornado score with a 43, followed by Luke Anderson and Robert Taylor with 44 and 45, respectively. The boys earned a second place finish with their team total of 171 points - just four behind Emmetsburg (167). Storm Lake's boys' JV team also competed, taking a third place finish with a score of 224. Nate Converse and Nick McDonald led the JV charge with 49 and 52, respectively.

For the girls, Cassie Moritz had the lowest Tornado score with a 55, followed closely by Beth Bedel with 56. Emmetsburg's Abby Bird and Megan Myers claimed top honors of the meet with their scores of 48 and 51, which also ensured a meet victory with a team total of 208 points. Storm Lake finished in third place with a team score of 253 behind Sheldon's 232 points.

Storm Lake finished second in a triangular match at LeMars Monday.

LeMars won with 167 strokes to 175 for Storm Lake and 187 for Estherville-Lincoln Central.

Tyler Gibbins carded a 41 to lead the Tornadoes, two shots out of medalist range; followed by Nate Converse with a 43; Paul Diehl at 45; and John Blum, Luke Anderson and Robert Taylor at 46.

Storm Lake girls placed third in a tringular match at Lake Creek Monday night. LeMars won the event with a 226, with Estherville-Lincoln Central two strokes behind. Storm Lake finished at 224.

Jenna Smith was the lone Tornado to break 60, with a 57 in the breezy conditions. Cassie Moritz checked in with a 60, Beth Bedel a 63, Jaye Lynn Kwikkel 64, Ashley Scuffham 66 and Kelsey Hartnett 72.

The girls are 2-10 on the season, 2-8 in the conference.

NW Conf. Meet

The Newell-Fonda boys claimed the Northwest Conference Golf Meet Monday night at Sioux Central's home course.

The Mustangs carded a strong 146, on the strength of Spencer Baak's impressive 33. James Tideman added a 36, Alex Vanderhoff a 38, Conner Juilfs 39, Robert Devereaux 41 and Ecan Franzmeier 44.

Tying for second was St. Mary's and Sioux Central, each with 161. The Panthers were paced by Tyler Netsch with a 37 and Alec Kestel with a 39. Brady Schreiber was low man for the Rebels at 37.

Aurelia finished fourth with 167 as Greg Kolpin turned in a 38.

Alta and Pomeroy-Palmer tied for fifth. Tim Gregg had a 43 for the Cyclones and Alex Ehn a 43 for the Knights.

Laurens-Marathon was seventh, and Schaller-Crestland had no score with only two golfers competing. Tyler Sandvig and Matt Swallin led the Chargers with 49's, and Andrew Stern shot a 49 for the Wildcats.

Spencer Baak took medalist honors, with James Tideman as runner-up.

The Newell-Fonda girls claimed victory in the Northwest Conference Golf Meet Monday at Newell.

The Mustangs shot 205 as a team, coming in ahead of Laurens-Marathon with 214, Pomeroy-Palmer with 226, Alta with 233, Sioux Central and Aurelia both at 238.

Trisha Johnson led Newell-Fonda with a 49 and was runner-up medalist, Susan Kies had a 51, Kelly Johnson 52, Becky Seivert 53, Hannah Rossiter 60 and Kari Bodholdt 65.

Laurens-Marathon was led by Kylie Woodley with a 46 and meet medalist honors.

Jill Erickson and Brady Gerdes were low for Pomeroy-Palmer with 55's.

Alta's Alysa Engelke shot a fine 52. Sioux Central's Jessica Stoner and Bailey Herrig each came in at 56, and Aurelia's Amanda Swanson carded a 58.

Storm Lake St. Mary's had only three golfers and no team score, but was competitive. Ashley Miller shot a 57, Erin Broich a 59 and Caitlyn White a 65.

Area Results

* Sioux Central girls were edged by Harris-Lake Park Tuesday on the Sioux Rapids course.

HJP finished 216 as a team, to 221 for Sioux Central.

Courtney Herrig carded a 51 for the Rebels to win medalist honors, while teammate Jessica Stoney was just a stroke behind as runner-up. Lexi Hiveley also had a 52 to lead a balanced HLP team.

* The Sioux Central boys slipped past Harris-Lake Park Tuesday, 170-173 at Sioux Rapids' course.

Brady Schreiber carded a 40 as medalist, with Sioux Central teammate Zach Weier a stroke behind as runner-up. Every member of the varsity shot 47 or under. Nate Bruggeman was low man for HLP with a 42. The Sioux Central junior varsity shot a 187, led by Kaleb Miller and Steve Stoner, each with 46's.

* Aurelia boys finished second in a triangular match April 24 at Fonda. Pocahontas Area won with 157, Aurelia finished at 171, and Pomeroy-Palmer at 200. Nick Felton shot a 40 for the Bulldogs.
