Playing its final two non-conference games of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, the Buena Vista baseball team closed the day with a doubleheader split with visiting St. Mary's University (Minn.) by scores of 4-3 and 7-6 (8 innings).
In the opener, the Cardinals jumpd out 2-0 in the second, and BV scored twice in the fourth as Brad Blum knocked a two-run double.
St. Mary's regained the lead with a run in the fifth before the late-game heroics in the bottom of the seventh gave BVU the one-run victory. Senior Jeff Weisenborn tied the game with a two-out single before Mike Hoffman's RBI single to right field ended it.
Luke Probasco got the win in relief of Christian Dekker for the Beavers, pitching the final four innings, allowing just one run on three hits.
The Cardinals scored in each of the first three innings of game two and led 5-3 after four innings. The Beavers then plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as St. Mary's tied things up with a run in the sixth before putting the winning run on the board in the eighth.
Weisenborn, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the game, drove in BVU's first run with a single up the middle. Pietrzyk pulled the Beavers even with his two-run triple in the third before Mike Hoffman's three-run home run down the right field line in the fifth gave the Beavers their only lead of the contest.
BVU committed five errors in the loss.
Kyle Dupic (4-2) suffered the loss in relief, despite giving up on one hit and striking out three in two innings.
BV, 16-14, returns to action on Wednesday evening, hosting Simpson College at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park.
