L-M's Travis Leuer leaps to 2nd place; S-C's Murra 6th in shot put; SL's Brungardt is 10th in discus
Area high school athletes took center stage at the Drake Relays Friday, with some three local individuals placing in the top 10 of the event which includes all class sizes competing together.
UNI-bound high jumper Travis Leuer of Laurens-Marathon finished second in the high jump with a vault of 6' 8", one inch behind Anamosa's Colten Kelly.
Storm Lake High School senior Michaela Brungardt finished 10th in the discus, with a second throw of 114'02.
Senior Kiley Murra of Schaller-Crestland placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 52' 1" and 13th in the discus with his 155' 3" throw.
Brooke Scharn of Sioux Central, who was competing in the 100-meter hurdles, earned 29th place in the preliminaries with a time of 16.55 but the sophomore did not advance to the finals.
Storm Lake's 4x100-meter girls' relay team, which consists of seniors Maleia Miller and Michaela Brungardt and sophomores Katie Blum and Slone Masters, did not advance to the finals after placing 19th in the preliminaries with a time of 51.79.
The Alta 4x100-meter relay team of juniors Jack Mills and Mike Huseman and seniors Chris Shmitz and Cody Nesbitt placed 42nd in 45.19.
The Storm Lake's boys' 4x100-meter team, which was made up of juniors Matt Ung and Eric Smith and seniors Chom Thammavongsa and Zach Miller was disqualified in the preliminaries.
Schaller-Crestland's girls' 4x100 team of sophomore Rachel Anderson, senior Alyssa Ringgenberg, freshman Roxanne Grundmeier and junior Molly Sippel ran 52.94 in the preliminaries, which landed them in 48th place and ended their Drake debut.
Nearly 8,000 athletes competed at the 99th Drake Relays.
