The Buena Vista County Pheasants Forever chapter will be kicking off its 2008 activities with the Youth Shoot event on May 4. The chapter will host the event at the gun club just north of Storm Lake, starting at 5 p.m. There will be plenty of chances to shoot clay pigeons, then hotdogs will be grilled for dinner. There is no charge for participating youth. All guns and shooting supplies will be provided. Contact Charlie Larson to sign up at 732-1070 or cell 712-299-6590.
The chapter had a busy year in 2007, spokesperson Jeff Kestel says.
Highlights of the year included assisting with the purchase of the Gaherty farm that will provide an additional 30 acres of wildlife habitat, food plots and good public hunting for Buena Vista County.
PF Chapter youth events included a trip to Elk wildlife area owned and managed by the County Conservation Board, to learn about habitat and identifying prairie plants. Youngsters had opportunities for hands-on experience in bow hunting, target shooting, hunting dogs, and fly fishing, and ended the evening with a hamburger and hotdog cookout. In October, the PF Chapter sponsored a youth pheasant hunt at the Buettner Game farm near Webb. Fifteen youth bagged 18 pheasants. There was also a safety program included and lots of clay pigeon shooting as well as a picnic lunch.
Pheasants Forever's annual banquet attracted 280 people and raised over $30,000 for use in Buena Vista County habitat and youth projects.
Along with these activities the PF chapter also provided seed for several winter food plots, seed for the Peterson conservation education area near Lake Creek and cost share money for several landowners to plant trees and native grasses.
Another youth hunt is being planned this fall in early October for boys and girls between 12 and 18 years old. "It is a very nice outing for a son or daughter with their parents," Kestel said.
The annual banquet will be November 1st. The whole family is invited to join in a fun evening and help raise funds for a good cause.
Feel free to call also if you have any other questions about our activities or would like to help out on the planning committee.
