SM BOYS WIN AT SPRING LAKE - The St. Mary's boys won a four-way battle by a single stroke as Schaller-Crestland played host for a golf meet at Spring Lake in Lake View Monday night.
The Panthers carded a team 181 to edge Newell-Fonda with 182. Sioux Central was third, just six strokes behind the leaders, and Aurelia finished fourth, one more stroke back.
Alta finished at 212, Laurens-Marathon at 224, Schaller-Crestland and Pomeroy-Palmer did not qualify. Greg Kolpin led Aurelia with a 42, Tim Gregg led Alta scoring with a 44.
ONE STROKE WIN FOR ALTA BOYS - Alta won a boys Northwest Conference golf meet at Alta Tuesday by a single stroke over rival Newell-Fonda this week, 215-214. Laurens-Marathon was third with a 228, Pomeroy-Palmer had a 239, Sioux Central 243, and Aurelia 245.
Kyle Woodley, Laurens-Marathon, was medalist with a round of 43. Courtney Herrig, Sioux Central, was runner-up wth a 49.
ALTA GIRLS WIN NW MEET - The Alta girls cruised to a first-place finish in a Northwest Conference golf meet Monday in Alta. Their 215 bested Aurelia at 245, Laurens-Marathon 228, Newell-Fonda 239, Sioux Central 243. St. Mary's had only three golfers and did not have a team score.
Kylie Woodley of Laurens-Marathon had the low round with an impressive 43. Sioux Central's Courtney Herrig had a 49 for runner-up honors
Alta was led by Kolbie Boom and Alyssa Engelke with 53s, Aurelia by Renae Hinkledey's 54, Newell-Fonda's Kelly Johnson carded a 50, Jill Erickson was low for Pomeroy-Palmer at 55, Ashley Miller led St. Mary's with a 53.
CYCLONES CLAIM COED DUAL - The Alta boys and girls golf teams won a coed dual glf meet tover Rockwell City-Lytoon at Alta Tuesday; the girls finishing 27 strokes up at 230, the boys winning by a whopping 40 strokes.
Kolbie Boom was medalist for the Alta girls with a 54; Jordan Larson for the boys with a 44.
LEMARS TOPS TORNADO GIRLS - Storm Lake girls tennis fell to LeMars 6-3 in windy conditions Tuesday night that made for difficult play.
Abby Smith defeated Samantha Rich 10-8, and sister Kelly Smith dropped Caitlin Bauerky 10-4. Tenth grader Linda Her continued fine play with a win in the five spot 10-4. Tornadoes Dah Khamphavonga, Amanda Helmbrecht and Amanda Kavan were beaten decisively in singles tests.
Storm Lake struggled in doubles, losing all three matches. The SLHS JV was crippled by absences and lost 9-0, having to forfeit one singles match.
The Tornadoes fall to 1-2 in conference play. The girls are scheduled to play Kuemper April 18.
REBELS SECOND AT POKY - The Sioux Central girls finished just nine team points behind St. Edmond for second in the Pocahontas Invitational Tuesday.
Brooke Sharn won the 100 meters in 15.29 and the 400 hurdles in 1:14.72. Jen Rushton also doubled up, winning the 800 in 2:50.26 and the 1500 in 5:39.80.
Also finishing first were the 4x800 team of Brittny Rebhuhn, Sunny Patten, Cassie Moens and Elise Knudtson; and the distance medley team of Delania Kulp, Allie Swanson, Brittny Rebhuhn and Jen Rushton.
The Rebels were second in shuddle hurdle relay and discus with Brady Rebhuhn, and added several thirds to nearly upset strong St. Ed's of Fort Dodge.
Laurens-Marathon finished third in team points in the six-team field. Holly Hofmaster won the long jump with 14'7.25".
SL BOYS IN TIGHT GAME AT HUMBOLDT - The Tornadoes were competitive in another defensive battle on the road at Humboldt Tuesday night, losing 3-2, their second one-goal loss in as many days this week. Storm Lake falls to 0-3, 0-2 in the conference. They travel to Spirit Lake Monday, then host Spencer on Friday.
The SLHS JV won 6-0.
