Stunt Airshows Coming to Storm Lake

Thursday, April 17, 2008

One of the first performers to sign on for the Fly Iowa "Wings, Wheels and Water" show in Storm Lake August 8-10 is veteran stunt pilot Greg Poe.

Poe has virtually spent his life in the air, earning his pilot's license during his teenage years in Idaho, and beginning to train almost immediately in aerobatics out of back country airstrips. He is now known as one of the best stunt pilots and aerobatics instructors in the world.

He has flown everything from gliders to aerial banner ad planes to float planes to a WWII Flying Fortress and Russian Mig-15 jets. He's worked as a test pilot, and performed full time in airshows around the world for over 15 years.

Greg has been chosen for several nationally televised airshow freestyle competitions, placing 2nd in the World Free Style Sport Flying Championships in 1999, and 3rd in the World Aerobatic Federation contest in 2000. Greg has been featured on TV's Modern Marvels, Ripley's Believe it or Not, The Discovery Channel, CBS news, FOX sports, ESPN and others

Greg's life has taken a major turn recently following the drug related death of his son Ryan. He now visits schools and youth groups discussing the incredible opportunities aviation has afforded him and telling his son's story as a reminder to young people about the importance of making the right choices and following their dreams.

Greg will bring his powerful, specially built Fagan stunt plane to Storm Lake as well as another aircraft. He says that he is proud to use planes that are 100 percent made in the USA and powered by ethanol fuel.

This summer's events will be the first major airshows held in Storm Lake since the Balloon Days events years ago. Storm Lake was chosen as the one statewide site for a Fly Iowa event this year.

Three other aerobatics acts have also been confirmed so far, including one glider air stunt show. A biplane pilot will also be on hand, with rides available.

A display of warbirds will be featured, hopefully including an iconic P51 Mustang.

Fly Iowa 2008 will draw together all forms of transportation in a three day event at Storm Lake Municipal Airport. Aircraft of all kinds, autos and recreational vehicles, and water-craft will all be on display. Activities being planned include an Iowa Aviation Youth Camp for Friday morning Aug 8; an Evening Glider Show over Storm Lake for Friday night; Fly-in, drive-in breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings; Aerobatic air shows Saturday and Sunday afternoons; a Barbecue Extravaganza for Saturday evening; and lots of exhibits, food and concessions. Entertainment is still being planned, and more acts will be announced soon, according to organizers. Admission will be free.
