Freshman wins BVU mound debut
Junior Garrett Hill went 3-for-6 with a double and two runs scored, and senior Jeff Weisenborn went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI, as the Buena Vista baseball team picked up an 8-3 non-conference victory at Dordt College (8-14) on Monday afternoon.
The Beavers got on the board early with a pair of runs in the first before adding one more in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Hill led off the game with a single and then stole second as Cody Aldrich followed with walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Weisenborn then came through with a two-run double, giving the Beavers a 2-0 lead. Brett Wilson drew a one out walk in the second and later scored on Weisenborn's RBI single.
Dordt scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third to pull within 3-1, but the Beavers pulled away in the fourth when they scored four runs to take a 7-1 lead. Wilson walked to lead off the inning before Hill and Aldrich each singled to load the bases. Brandon Pietrzyk later drove home Wilson with an RBI groundout before Hill and Aldrich scored on back-to-back wild pitches. Michael Hoffman capped the scoring when he crossed the plate on an error by the shortstop as Chris Dolezal reached base safely.
Dordt got two runs back in the sixth, but BVU added one run in the seventh on an RBI single from Aldrich.
Wilson finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Freshman Devon Archibald made his collegiate debut for the Beavers as he got the start on the mound, while also chalking up his first career victory in the process. The Elk Horn, Iowa, native went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Chris Bireline, Jonny Saar and Tregg Fay combined in relief.
Buena Vista improves to 11-7 overall and was scheduled for a doubleheader at Simpson Wednesday night, a trip to Northwesten Thursday, and to host Coe Friday.
