Alta boys shine, second in Russ Kraii Relays

The Alta boys had a strong showing to lead the area in the Russ Kraii Relays at Holstein Monday night, finishing second amid an 18-team field to powerful Lawton-Bronson.

Laurens-Marathon was third, with Galva-Holstein fourth, and Sioux Central fifth. Among other local schools, Aurelia was 13th, Storm Lake St. Mary's 16th and Galva-Holstein JV 18th.

Mike Huseman got Alta off to a strong start, winning back-to-back sprint events. Huseman was first in the 100 meters in 11.44. Keton Joynt of Laurens-Marathon was second, Sam Radke of Galva-Holstein third, Ryan Sernett of Laurens-Marathon sixth. Huseman won the 200 in 23.25, with teammate Jack Mills fourth.

In the 400 meters, John Harris of Galva-Holstein was first in 51 seconds, followed by Ryan Stumbo of Laurens-Marathon in a ties for fourth.

In the 800, Josiah DeRoos of Alta was sixth.

In the 1600, St. Mary's sophomore Paul Yak came into his own, finishing second by only seven seconds, before going on to win the 3200 in 10:43.17. David Jones of Laurens-Marathon was fourth in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200.

In the 110 hurdles, Jared Schlinz of Galva-Holstein was first in 17.27; Scott Radke of Alta was third; Collin Bubke of Galva-Holstein was fifth; and Jeremiah Davis of Sioux Central was sixth.

In the 400 hurdles, Kellen Jacobson of Galva-Holstein was second; Nate Cowell of Sioux Central was third; Scott Radke of Alta was sixth.

In the 4x100, Alta won in an impressive 45.50, with Laurens-Marathon second and Sioux Central sixth.

In the 4x200, Alta won again in 1:36.38, edging Sioux Cental by half a second.

In the 4x400, Sioux Central won in 3:37.06, with Galva-Holstein second, Laurens-Marathon fourth, and Aurelia sixth.

In the 4x800, Galva-Holstein was second and Aurelia fourth.

In the 4x100 shuttle hurdles, area schools dominates with Galva-Holstein first in 1:03.70, Sioux Central second, Laurens-Marathon third and Alta fourth.

In the 1600 sprint medley, Sioux Central won in 3:55.44, Galva-Holstein second, Aurelia third and Alta fifth.

In the high jump, Travis Leuer of Laurens-Marathon was the class of the field, clearing 6'6" to win by 10 inches. Adam Ehlers of Sioux Central was third; Kolby Joynt of Laurens-Marathon fifth.

In the long jump, Collin Bubke of Galva-Holstein was second; Jack Mills of Alta fifth.

In discus, Newell-Fonda's powerful Luke Sarchet uncorked a toss of 142'01" to win by over 10 feet. Miah Haller of Alta was third, with teammate Jake Syndergaard fifth.

In shot put, the Mustangs' Sarchet was second; Andrew Hansen of Laurens-Marathon third; Alta's Brady Randall fourth; Adam Dreezen of Galva-Holstein fifth.

Four local girls teams in top six at Holstein meet

The girls' field at the Russ Kraai Relays in Holstein Monday was 17 teams deep, showcasing lots of area small-school talent.

Southern Cal topped team scoring with 924 points, followed closely by Sioux Central with 893 and Galva-Holstein with 789, one point better than Laurens-Marathon.

Alta finished a strong sixth, Aurelia was 12th, Newell-Fonda 13th, Storm Lake St. Mary's 14th and Galva-Holstein JV 16th.

In the 100 meters, Megan Hoffmaster, Laurens-Marathon, was second; and Rachel Culp, Newell-Fonda, fourth.

In the 200, the Chargers' Hoffmaster was again second; Audrey Winterhof of Aurelia was third; Caitlin Patten of Sioux Central was fourth; Geneva Heschke of Alta tied for sixth.

In the 400, the Mustangs' Rachel Culp was second and Alta's Jordan Henningsen sixth.

In the 800, Breanna Mathes of Galva-Holstein was second, St. Mary's junior Christine Becker third; Jayde Boyle of Galva-Holstein fourth; Rachel Culp of Newell-Fonda fifth; and Emily Mohr of St. Mary's sixth.

In the 1500, Jessica Mathes of Galva-Holstein won in 5:27.24; the Panthers' Christine Becker was second; Jennifer Rushton of Sioux Central was fourth; Emily Mohr of St. Mary's was fifth; Nicole Boyle of Galva-Holstein was sixth.

In the 3000, Ashley Drey of Galva-Holstein was second; Chelsea Musgjerd of Laurens-Marathon was fourth; Nicole Connolly of Alta was fifth; Ashley Nelson, Sioux Central, was sixth.

In the 100 meter hurdles, Brooke Scharn of Sioux Central was second; Diana Johnsen of Laurens-Marathon fifth; Jesse Bibler, Alta, sixth.

In the 400 meter hurdles, the Rebels' Brooke Scharn won in 1:27.71; Brittny Rebhuhn of Sioux Central was fifth.

In the 4x100 relay, Laurens-Marathon was second, Sioux Central third.

In the 4x200, Aurelia was fourth and Sioux Central sixth.

In the 4x 400, Galva-Holstein won in 4:28.40; Laurens-Marathon was fifth; Sioux Central sixth.

In the 4x800. Galva-Holstein won in 10:43.52; Sioux Central was third.

In the 4x100 shuttle hurdles, Sioux Central won in 1:11.21; Laurens-Marathon was third; Alta fourth.

In the 800 sprint medley, Aurelia was third; Laurens-Marathon fifth.

In the distance medley, Galva-Holstein won in 4:43.58; Sioux Central was second; Laurens-Marathon third; Alta fifth.

In high jump, Jordan Sunblad, Laurens-Marathon, was third; Shelby Dierenfield, Aurelia, was fourth.

In the long jump, Holly Hoffmaster, Laurens-Marathon, was second; Jessica Mathes, Galva-Holstein third; Jordan Henningsen of Alta fourth.

In discus, Brittany Rydstrom of Laurens-Marathon was ffifth.

In the shot put, Alta's Ashley Syndergaard was third; Jammee Hunt from Laurens-Marathon was fourth; Brittany Rydstrom was sixth.
