City deals with ballpark, road project

Members of the Storm Lake City Council took care of many items of business during a short meeting Monday including approval to move annual Cinco De Mayo based event, Fiesta Latina to the community.

*Approval was given for members of the Buena Vista Intercultural Programs to hold Fiesta Latina in Chautauqua Park on April 27 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The resolution included permission to use the park, a noise variance during the event, closure of the Chautauqua Park Road from Hudson Street to Lakeshore Drive.

*A public hearing with an intent to lease Memorial Ball fields was set for April 21 at 5 p.m. with a proposed lease with St. Mary's School. The original lease with St. Mary's expired on Dec. 1, 2007. Both the school board and City Attorney have approved the lease for 10 years at $1 per year. A resolution to approve the lease will be considered following the hearing.

*Council members adopted a resolution to improve the airport parking lot project. The project will include a reconstruction and expansion of the current parking lot and is not expected to begin until after Fly Iowa in early August. Construction costs are estimated to be about $148,808 .

*Council members adopted a resolution for a construction contract for the W. Lakeshore Drive Reconstruction project. Smith Concrete, of Storm Lake, has been awarded the $554,488.35 contract. Construction is scheduled to begin after July 4.

* The mayor presented a proclamation for Sexual Abuse Prevention month.

* Final acceptance of food service equipment for King's Pointe resort was granted.
