Junior Brandon Pietrzyk blasted a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to lift BVU over Peru State, 9-6, in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Buena Vista was leading 8-1 in game two before it was called in third inning because of rain/sleet.
The Bobcats jumped out to a big lead early, scoring all six of their runs on six hits in the bottom half of the third inning, to go in front 6-0. The Beavers then plated one run in the fourth, four more in the fifth, before tying it with a run in the sixth.
Tyler Case finished with two hits for BVU, which finished with only five in the contest. Pietrzyk drove in four runs and also scored a pair of runs, as Michael Stephenson also scored twice.
Kyle Dupic came on in relief of Nick Lanning to pick up his first career victory. The freshman went the final four innings without allowing a hit or run and recorded a walk and a strikeout.
Buena Vista sits at 4-1 overall and will now travel to Minneapolis, Minn., on Wednesday for an 11:15 p.m. doubleheader with St. Scholastica inside of the H.H.H. Metrodome.
