Buena Vista softball team starts season 1-5 at St. Thomas Invite

The Buena Vista softball team recorded one win in six games over the weekend during the St. Thomas Invitational which took place inside of the Rosemount Dome here.



BVU opened with the host Tommies on Friday afternoon and was handed a pair of setbacks: 9-0 in six innings and 9-1 in five innings, respectively.

Four different players picked up hits for BVU in the opener - all singles.

Brandi Sykora suffered the loss for BVU, allowing nine runs on 13 hits, while walking three. In the final game of the twin bill, Amanda Mordhorst went 1-for-3 with a run scored as the Beavers finished with only four hits in the contest.

Freshman Morgan Darrow suffered the loss on the mound for BVU, going three innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits. 



BVU then picked up its first win of the season, topping St. Mary's (Minn.), 4-2 in the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday evening.

Monica Tucker finished 2-for-4, while Amy Hasbrouck, Allysa Stephens, Ty Zimmerman and Sykora each finished with a hit and an RBI. Hasbrouck also scored twice for the Beavers. 



On the mound, Sykora went all seven innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out four. 



BVU then jumped in front 3-0 after one inning in game two, only to see St. Mary's put up four runs in the top of the second.

BVU regained the lead at 6-4 with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning before each team plated two runs in their half of the third. The Beavers, who held an 8-6 lead, saw St. Mary's then blow the game open in the fourth by scoring seven runs to grab an 11-6 lead.

BVU scored its final run of the contest in the fifth, while St. Mary's, who scored in every inning but the first, tallied one more in the fifth, two in the six and one in the seventh. 


Zimmermann led BVU at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Stephens, who also homered, along with Tucker and Sykora tallied two hits with Tucker also adding a pair of RBI. 



BVU capped off the Invitational by dropping a pair of games (4-0 and 16-0) to Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) on Sunday. 


The Beavers currently stand at 1-5 overall and will take the field next on March 16 when the team begins its Spring Break Trip in Tuscon, Ariz.

BVU faces Macalester in the opener at 10:30 a.m. before taking on Augsburg at 1 p.m. The team plays games over the trip from March 16-21.
