Boys JV basketball season ends

The Alta JV boys basketball team hosted their annual tournament on Saturday Feb. 2 at the middle school and lost both games to Storm Lake and Newell-Fonda.  In game 1 Alta started fast and led for most of the game only to have the Tornado's catch them to force overtime and eventually lose by a score of 41-36.  Cameron Manteufel led Alta's scoring attack with 18 points, Josiah DeRoos followed with 9 points, Zach DeRoos 4, Brody Lichtenberg 3 and D.J. Bass 2.  Manteufel had 12 rebounds, Josiah DeRoos 10, Bass 3 and Zach DeRoos 2.  Josiah DeRoos had 3 steals and Lichtenberg had 2 assists.  "I was proud of how hard we played because we were shorthanded today with only six players available.  If we make our freethrows we win the game. Give Storm Lake credit as they made the play to reach overtime and then controlled us from there."  commented Coach Lietz. 

 In game two of the day for Alta they took on the Mustangs of Newell-Fonda and came out on the short of a 32-30 score.  The Clones were led in scoring by Josiah DeRoos with 12 points, Manteufel and Bass 9 had 9 each.  Josiah DeRoos had 15 rebounds, Manteufel 5, Lichtenberg 4, Zach DeRoos and Bass 3 apiece and Doug Bonnesen 2.  Bonnesen and Bass had 1 steal each and Bass had 1 assist.  "We got a little tired in game 2 but we left it on the floor.  We had a chance to win at the end and couldn't get a shot to fall.  We might have lost twice today but our kids gave tremendous effort and I'm proud of them for that."  said Coach Lietz.  Alta's record now stands at 9-5.

 Feb. 7

The Alta Freshman boys basketball team entewrtained the Braves from Cherokee on Thursday Feb. 7 at the Alta Middle School and came away with a 48-37 win.  Ryan Friedrich led all scorers with 16, followed closely by Christian Weiland with 15, Zack DeRoos with 14 and D.J. Bass 3. Brody Lichtenberg had 5 rebounds, Friedrich, DeRoos and Bengston 4 each. Bass 2, Weiland and Doug Bonnesen 1 each.  DeRoos and Friedrich had 1 steal each and DeRoos, Lichtenberg and Bengston all had 1 assist.  "We played pretty well today but I'd like to see a little more balance on the offensive end.  This ensures us of a winning season with one more game to go and it nice to see improvements as the season rolls on."  said Coach Lietz.  Alta's record now stands at 7-4.
