Beavers Fall in Overtime to Coe in IIAC Quarterfinal Matchup

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Four players scored in double figures for Buena Vista, but it wasn't quite enough as Coe College outscored BVU 17-2 in overtime to knock off the Beavers 88-73 on Tuesday night.

Aubrey Hauswirth's layup with 35 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 71-71. Both teams then had a shot at the end of regulation to win it but both came up just short.

In overtime, Katie Ebel sank a pair of free throws to give BVU a 73-71 advantage, but Shannon Nelson scored nine of Coe's first 11 points in the extra stanza, as the Kohawks scored the final 17 points of the game en route to their first-ever IIAC Tournament win.

BVU, which shot 38 percent over the first 20 minutes, built a 10-point lead (24-14) with just over seven minutes left in the half before the Kohawks cut the deficit down to two with an 8-0 run of their own. The Beavers then went on a quick 9-4 spurt to build a 33-26 lead and took a 36-31 lead into the locker room.

Jenn Schumann, who turned in a team-high eight points and six rebounds in the opening half, nailed a jumper to begin the second stanza before the Kohawks used an 12-2 run to take a 43-40 lead just under four minutes into the half.

BVU then used a 19-9 run, capped by Jenni Schweitzberger's jumper, to regain a 59-52 advantage. Sarah Anciaux helped put Coe back in front, 62-61, by scoring six of the team's next 10 points. BVU then got back-to-back three's down the stretch from Jen Allen and Courtney Stoelk to go in front 69-67 with 1:19 left. Coe then scored the game's next four points before Hauswirth's layup.

Hauswirth, Schumann, and Ebel led BVU with 14 points apiece as Muhlbauer chipped in with 11. Defensively, Stoelk hauled in a team-best 10 rebounds as Schumann and Allen tallied three steals.

Anciaux led all scorers with 27 points for Coe, on 10-of-19 shooting from the field, as Amber Karkosh followed with 18 points and 10 boards.

BVU concludes its season at 13-13 overall as the Kohawks improve to 19-7 and will travel to Luther College on Thursday night for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off with the Norse in the semifinal round of the Iowa Conference Tournament.
