Entering their 90s, two local bowlers are still having a ball

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Irene Winterhof and Isabelle Shaw are having a "ball" in their golden years!

The two women are on a women's bowling league together and enjoy it immensely.

Irene celebrated her 90th birthday on Tuesday - at the bowling alley - and Isabelle will turn 90 later this year.

Both have been bowling for a good many years. Their age doesn't seem to hinder their games - both still average 140 or better.

Irene and her husband, who passed away 19 years ago, shared the pastime and bowled on a couple's league for many years. She has been on the Tuesday Matinee team for the past six years.

At one time, in her younger years, Isabelle bowled on four leagues; she remains on the matinee league and on an evening league. The Storm Lake lady lost the sight in one of her eyes a few years ago but manages to see the bowling pins just fine with her one eye.

The two women are admired by everyone in the league, which has a median age of 70.

Both take their games seriously.

"Irene has a little bit of a curve in the balls she throws," commented one member, with a slightly envious tone.

While they are supportive of their teammates, they also enjoy being competitive. Irene can be heard saying "SOB" - "should of been," that is -when the ball doesn't hit the pocket the way she intends.

The bowling is good exercise and social time for all of the participants. There are plenty of smiles that go along with those strikes and spares and Irene and Isabelle enjoy the fellowship that they share each week with the other bowlers - that is why they never miss a date at the bowling alley.
