SM students raise money for a prize trip to the 'Today' Show

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Storm Lake St. Mary's School students have raised funds for one of the highlighted items up for grabs at the St. Mary's Ball and Charity Auction. Students in grades preK-8 raised $400 towards two nights' stay at the exclusive Club Quarters on Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.

The lodging is part of a package where the high bidder can receive up to four passes during the broadcast of NBC's The Today Show, also at Rockefeller Plaza. They will also receive a private tour of the studio from an executive producer. The value of the package is listed as "priceless." It will be auctioned off at the St. Mary's Ball and Charity Auction Saturday, March 15 at Buena Vista University.

Under the leadership of St. Mary's School parent Kristen Betts, the students formed the St. Mary's Children's Fundraising Committee with representatives from each of the classes. The students attended an organizational meeting, prepared packets with envelopes to go home to their classmates, and encouraged their classmates to donate.

Betts encouraged the students to be certain to donate their own money for the project whether it's a quarter or a larger amount. She said that many of the classes had 100 percent participation - all students contributed some monetary amount.

The Today Show trip is one of many trips to be auctioned at the St. Mary's gala event. Another highlighted trip is a Florida Disney trip with Park Hopper passes and tickets from Southwest Airlines and a debit card. Other trips include the Iowa Great Lakes; Fremont, Neb. dinner train; Cherokee Jazz Festival; Hazeltine National Golf Club; Sioux City Symphony and Sioux City Orpheum and more. Trips are on the Live and the Silent Auction listings.

Details on the auction items are available on the event webpage: www.saintmarysalumni.org/Auction. To bid on these items and attend this fundraiser, tickets are a minimum donation of $45 per person. Tickets include appetizers and a full meal with beef and chicken entrees and dessert, beer and wine cocktails courtesy of Central Bank. Those donating $175 per couple or $87.50 per person can attend the Fratzke-Jensen Private Wine Cellar pre-party at 5:15-6:30 p.m. with hot appetizers, open bar and mini-wine tasting stations.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for the event and the Paxtons' Chest of Chance bags will go on sale for $25 each. Silent Auction bidding will also begin. Live Auction and the meal will begin at 7:30 p.m. At the conclusion of the Live Auction, winners to the California wine country will be drawn, as well as the $10,000 Big Raffle winners. The evening will conclude with dancing to Nashville's Mike Brookshire and the Starvin' Hounds.

To purchase dinner/event tickets or raffle tickets, contact St. Mary's Development Office at (712)732-3110 or smalumni@iw.net. Tickets are not sold at the doors. All proceeds benefit St. Mary's preK-12 School.

In 2007, over $70,000 was raised for the school.
