The Buena Vista men's tennis team opened its 2008 schedule with a key 7-2 home victory over Simpson College on Friday afternoon.
BVU swept through doubles play before winning 4-of-6 singles matches. Aaron Wigg and Tim Coleman opened things up with a thrilling 9-8 (7-0) victory at No. 1 doubles before Benjamin Stone/Derrick Young and Ronald Muhammad/Andrew Humphrey cruised to 8-2 wins, respectively, at No. 2 and 3.
In singles play, Wigg and Stone were victorious at No. 1 and 2, respectively, while Young and Humphrey iced the win with victories in their No. 4 and 5 matches, respectively.
All four singles matches were won in straight sets for BVU. After dropping his first set, 6-3, Coleman fought back to win the second, 6-3, but then fell 10-7 in the decisive third set.
It was the first time BVU has knocked off Simpson since topping the Storm, 5-4, back in 2002. The win was also the first overall victory for the Beavers since capturing a 5-2 decision over Upper Iowa back in 2004.
Buena Vista is now 1-0 overall (1-0 IIAC) and will return to action on Saturday when the team hosts Luther College at 12 p.m.
