Laurens-Marathon boys end N-F's season

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

LAURENS - Newell-Fonda hung tight with Laurens-Marathon Saturday before the Chargers started to pull away late in the third quarter, beating the Mustangs 66-49 in a 1A District 4 opener here.

The Chargers improved to 15-6 and advanced to face No. 4 Alta tonight at the same location.

N-F bowed out 10-12.

"We played L-M strong before they went on a small run in the third quarter to extend their lead in the game to double digits," Mustangs coach Paul Loos said. "L-M played solid halfcourt defense and shot the ball well. We lost Robert Devereaux early in the game to an ankle injury and that didn't help our cause. He was averaging a double-double over the last few games of the year.

"I was pleased with our intensity but L-M was just as intense."

Nathan Schumann led the Mustangs with 15 points and five rebounds, while Brad Anderson added 11 points and three steals.

Luke Sarchet had seven rebounds and two blocks, as Nathan Reichter charted six points and four assists.

Jacob Johnson added two blocks.

L-M individual stats were not reported.
