Faust Institute of Cosmetology students and staff take top honors at state contest

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

The Cosmetologist and Barbers of Iowa held their State Convention at the Renaissance Savery Hotel in Des Moines Feb. 10-11. This year's conference was titled, "Steps to Success."

Instructors and directors from the Faust Institute of Cosmetology schools attended classes with Doug Cox, a well-known motivational speaker and communication's consultant and with Madrid Johnson, a nationally known master of ethnic hair.

One of the highlights was the student competition. Theme for this year was, "Bridal Fantasy." Cosmetology students from all over the state took part in the competition. There were 19 teams which consisted of a model and no more than three stylists, who used their creativity abilities to come up with a theme for their presentation. Once the competition started, the teams had one hour to style the model's hair, do make-up and the nails and then pose the model for judging.

Faust Institute of Cosmetology in Spirit Lake earned first place. Their theme was, "Winter Wonder Wedding." Their model was Emily Williams, Worthington, Minn, and the stylists were Kim Paplow, Estherville; Tara Vander Plaats and Chelsea Luedemann, Sibley.

Third place in the state was earned by Faust Institute of Cosmetology of Storm Lake. Their theme was, "Indian Bride." Serving as model was Elizabeth Auffert, Stanton, and stylists were Tonya Meusburger, Albert City; Eva Porras, Storm Lake and Kate Bloyer, Schaller.

Others teams competing from Storm Lake were Tiffany Parker and Halley Schnell, Newell, with model Stacey Glass, Storm Lake; and Natasha Jansen, Aurelia; Jenna Lenz, Schaller; Ashley Nehring, Storm Lake, with model Lisa Daily, Des Moines.

The awards banquet was another highlight of the convention. Those from the area receiving awards were Molly Anderson - daughter of Mary Jo Olthoff, Storm Lake, and Todd Anderson, Branden, SD - a former Faust student, was chosen for the "Student of the Year" award. She graduated in October and is a stylist for Salon W. in Des Moines. Melanie Brons, Lake Park, was presented with the "Educator of the Year" award. She has been associated with Faust Institutes of Cosmetology since 1990 and is currently the educational director where she leads the advanced continuing education classes and reviews the curriculum and techniques used.
