Spartans post dramatic turnaround on St. Mary's

Connor Richardson poured in 15 points here Monday but it wasn't enough to prevent St. Mary's from beating a team it had defeated by 33 points earlier this season at the CYO Tournament at Briar Cliff.

Playing Spalding Catholic on the road proved a daunting task, as the Spartans broke open a one-point game by outscoring the Panthers 17-6 in the third quarter of a 55-47 win.

The Panthers (0-13 NWC), who fell to 2-18 on the year, beat Spalding 88-53 in the teams' first meeting.

"We played poorly from start to finish. We didn't play well on the defensive end and were 20-for-60 from the field," Panthers coach Brad Wilkening said. "We were 4-for-11 on the free throw line while Spalding was 14-for-24.

"We made a run at them in the fourth, cutting the lead to three points, but were not able to get the lead."

Jon Foell had a solid all-around game for St. Mary's, posting 13 points, 12 rebounds and five steals.

Ryan Drey added six steals and Michael Ivey dropped off three assists.
