Storm Lake ACE teens organize a Career Fair for February

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Advanced Career Exploration students from Storm Lake High School are inviting area employers to participate in an innovative approach to helping area businesses recruit new workers. ACE students have organized a Career Fair for Storm Lake High School Students and Parents to be held during Student/Parent/Teacher conferences on Feb. 26 and 28, from 1-7:30 p.m. at Storm Lake High School. Iowa Workforce Development, Iowa Central Community College, and KAYL/KKIA Radio will partner with the students to help with this event.

The February conferences are required for all ninth, tenth, and 11th grade students and their parents, so attendance should be high for the career fair. ACE students hope 12th grade students will also attend the fair as they consider their career options following graduation.

ACE students feel the career fair will bring several positive outcomes, such as helping high school students find part-time jobs, educating students and their parents as to the wide variety of full-time jobs available in the Storm Lake area, and helping to partner educators and employers to work together to promote student success in school and in the workplace. The fair also fits into District Goal 5, where the school district it to provide support to students and families to help increase student participation, attendance, and graduation.

Employers are asked to bring lists of all part-time and full-time jobs available now and the near future, as well as a list of skills employees need to be successful at the worksite. Students also hope the employers will research the SLHS curriculum and recommend specific classes students should complete before entering the workforce. Participation is free to all area businesses. Since space is limited, employers are advised to register by Feb. 1. All questions should be directed to Pegg Havens, ACE Instructor, Storm Lake High School, 712-732-8065 or phavens@slcsd.org.
