Marcus Alafa (119 pounds) and Schuyler Radke (145) each won titles as Alta's wrestling team took third out of eight teams here Saturday at the Laurens-Marathon Charger Invitational.
Jake Syndergaard (285), who hadn't wrestled the past two weeks due to a rib injury, placed second. So did Scott Robbins (130) and Miah Haller (189). Matt Sefcik (215) took third after rolling his ankle two weeks ago.
Haller, a senior, usually wrestles at 160 or 171, making his performance Saturday all the more impressive.
"He hasn't been out since seventh grade. I talked him into going into wrestling so he could prepare for criminal science," Cyclones coach Louie DeRoos said. "So he could take down a fugitive and put him into handcuffs. I figured swimming wouldn't help him too much with that."
DeRoos said Alafa and Radke were both on their "A Game" Saturday.
"I was really proud of them," he said. "It's pretty cool seeing them walk away with what you teach them on the mat ... Overall the tournament went outstanding."
Ernesto Dominguez (103), Josh Sager (112) and Cody Duhn (125) all got fourth for Alta while Nathanial Robbins (135) took fifth.
The Cyclones square up against Storm Lake and East Sac County tonight at Storm Lake at 6. AGHSC is not expected to compete due to an outbreak of infitago, DeRoos said.
