Three young women have been chosen to serve as Iowa pork royalty for 2008 by the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
The Iowa Pork Queen, Iowa Pork Princess and Iowa Premier Pork Youth Ambassador were announced Wednesday night, Jan. 23, at the Iowa Pork Congress banquet in Des Moines.
Jennifer Leistikow was crowned the 2008 Iowa Pork Queen. The University of Iowa student is the daughter of Kevin and Deanne Leistikow from Readlyn in Bremer County. The Leistikows own and operate a custom swine feeding operation.
Kourtney Determan of Early in Sac County is the 2008 Iowa Pork Princess. She is a student at Schaller-Crestland High School and the daughter of Steve and Barb Determan.
Leistikow and Determan were among 11 county pork queens competing for the 2008 IPPA crowns.
Emily Staudacher, a student at Indianola High School in Warren County, will serve as the 2008 Iowa Premier Pork Youth Ambassador. She is the daughter of Rene Staudacher.
Staudacher was one of three young women who served as ambassadors for their county pork associations and competed for the IPPA ambassador role.
All of the contestants were judged on their interviewing and communications skills, poise, presentation and overall knowledge of the pork industry and Iowa agriculture.
The three youth will serve as representatives of the Iowa Pork Producers Association and assist with various pork promotional and educational activities throughout the year.
The new Iowa Pork Queen and the Iowa Premier Pork Youth Ambassador each receive a $2,000 scholarship and the Iowa Pork Princess earns a $1,000 scholarship from the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
