Four wrestlers - Patrick Higgins (140 pounds), Ryan Lovstad (145), Chris Rios (119) and Gabrial Torres (103) - placed individually for the Tornadoes at the Battle Creek-Ida Grove Invitational held Friday and Saturday as Storm Lake's wrestling team took 20th out of 21 teams with just nine wrestlers at the meet.
"I really thought we wrestled tired on Friday, we just did not wrestle the way we are capable," Tornadoes coach Ty Seaman said. "On Saturday we came back and really did a nice job. We won several matches in the last 30 seconds and pushed the pace for the whole match.
"This is a really tough meet ... We have had some sickness and injuries that we just needed some time to heal so we held some kids out. It is tough to score well as a team when you do that, but with the conference meet this week we felt we needed to hold some kids out."
Higgins and Lovstad each placed fourth in their respective weight class while Rios took sixth and Torres seventh.
Higgins went 3-2 overall, losing to AGHSC's Kyle Yearous in the medal round.
Lovstad lost a 1-0 decision to Kingsley-Pierson's Sean Bainbridge in the medal round, and went 3-2 overall. Bainbridge also handed Lovstad a 10-6 loss in the quarterfinals.
Rios went 2-2, losing to AGHSC's Tyler Kenny in his consolation match.
Torres defeated Twin River Valley's Cody Maggard 6-4 in the medal round.
Storm Lake (8-5, 4-4 Lakes) takes on MOC-FV and M-M-C at 6:30 tonight in Orange City. The Tornadoes then head to the Lakes Conference meet Friday at 5 p.m. in Spencer.
