Upset in Laurens: N-F suffers first league loss

Thursday, January 17, 2008

It was arguably the area's biggest upset to date this season, with the exception of Storm Lake's early-season thriller over Western Christian's boys.

Jordan Sundblad went for a co-game-high 27 points, Amanda Zylstra added 17, and Laurens-Marathon's girls team handed Class 1A No. 7-ranked Newell-Fonda its first Northwest Conference loss of the season here Tuesday night, 73-67.

Newell-Fonda was one game removed from hanging a 38-point beating on Sioux Central.

The Mustangs fell to 13-2 overall and 10-1 in the league, while the Chargers improved to 9-2 in the league to hold down the second-place spot.

Susan Kies led Newell-Fonda with 27 points and Becky Seivert joined her in double figures with 11. Kies also had nine steals while Karina Overgaard snared nine boards.

Rachel Culp doled out seven dimes.

L-M's Kacie Woodley added 12 points as teammates Holly Hofmaster and Zylstra chipped in six steals apiece.

Mustangs coach Dick Jungers called it a great atmosphere for a tough conference game.

"We need to do a better job of taking care of the basketball and to finish our opportunities. We have to do a better job of playing fundamental basketball and to just do our job with the press and the half court defense," he said. "We gave up too many opportunities for them to be successful. Laurens played a great game and they out- executed us when it mattered most. Our kids gave a great effort, but we have to be more focused and do a better job of executing our game plan and to take care of the things that we have to do to be successful.

"As a coach I have to make better adjustments and to do a better job of getting our kids to play fundamental basketball.

"Hats off to L-M for their great effort and playing tough for 32 minutes."
