Fire destroys Marathon machine shed

On Tuesday Jan. 15 at approximately 4:19 a.m., the Marathon Fire Department was called to a machine shed fire at 1948 County Line Road. The caller advised the building was fully engulfed. The building is owned by K-Webb Inc.

Upon arrival, fire fighters encountered flames coming through the roof. The marathon Fire Department was assisted by the Sioux Rapids Fire Department and the Webb Fire Department.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was conducted by the Marathon Fire Department, the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Fire Marshall. The cause of this fire was ruled accidental. No intentional sources were determined. The area of origin of this fire was located in the south center part of the building. The most probable cause of this fire was an equipment malfunction that started a fire in the block heater on a tractor.
