BVU women pound Central for second straight league 'W'

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

This one got out of hand shortly after the opening tip. That was a good thing for the home team, but not so much for Dutch fans.

The Buena Vista women's basketball team used red-hot 53 percent shooting (45-of-85) to cruise past Iowa Conference foe Central 109-72 Saturday at Siebens Fieldhouse. The win moved the Beavers to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the IIAC after starting out 0-2 in the league.

A Jen Allen 3-pointer gave the Beavers a 33-9 lead - and there was still 11:20 showing on the clock in the first half. Buena Vista led 65-32 at halftime, and with 8:20 to go in the game, Margo Muhlbauer canned a jumper to give the Beavers their biggest lead of the game, at 95-50, right before BVU coach Janet Berry called off the dogs.

The Beavers' 65-point first-half outburst was a season-high for points in a half. The 37-point drubbing was also the school's largest margin of victory all-time over Central. The next biggest margin was a 32-point woodshed beating (101-69) in the 2005-06 season.

Muhlbauer paced Buena Vista with 24 points, while scoring 20 of them in the first half. Allen also had a career high on the night with 13 points. Aubrey Hauswirth chipped in with 10 of her own.

Not only were the Beavers on fire from the floor, they also shot 47 percent behind the arc while connecting on 7-of-11 in the first half. They went 11-for-13 at the foul line.

Central was led by two freshmen - Andrea Clark with 23 points and Jordan Waddell off the bench with 20. The Dutch were held to just 34 percent shooting while getting out-boarded 57-33. BVU snared 21 offensive rebounds.

The Dutch fell to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in the IIAC.

The Beavers will look to win their third straight conference game when they travel to Dubuque to face Loras College tomorrow at 6 p.m.
