Stangs break free from Pomeroy in second half

Leading 33-31 at halftime, Newell-Fonda's boys basketball team went on to outscore Pomeroy-Palmer 41-26 in the second half of a 74-57 Northwest Conference win for the Mustangs Tuesday.

With the win, Newell-Fonda (8-5, 6-3 Northwest Conference) held on to third place in the league race while keeping pressure on second-place Laurens-Marathon (7-2 NWC).

"We had a solid team effort tonight," said Newell-Fonda coach Paul Loos. "We played good team ball for this win."

The Mustangs were 11-for-15 at the charity stripe and they outrebounded the Knights 32-25.

Robert Devereaux led a four-player double-digit scoring effort with 15 points.

Brad Anderson followed with 14, Nathan Schumann 13 and Jack Reis 12.

Nathan Reichter dropped off 10 of the Mustangs' 19 assists.

Devereaux snatched a team-leading 11 rebounds, four of them offensive. Schumann added seven boards and four blocks.
