Chargers shoot past St. Mary's boys

Thursday, January 10, 2008

Tuesday night was cold to begin with. For the St. Mary's boys basketball team, it was even more frigid in the Panther Pit.

The Panthers (2-12, 0-9 NWC) shot just 12-for-50 from the floor, including 2-for-13 on treys, in a 52-33 league loss to Laurens-Marathon.

The Chargers improved to 7-2 in the league, in which they trail first-place and 1A top-ranked Alta by two games.

"Laurens-Marathon was able to penetrate our defense all night long," St. Mary's coach Brad Wilkening said, while also pointing out his team's 12-for-50 shooting performance. "While we played hard, we weren't always playing smart.

"L-M has a very nice team, but we are better than our showing last night."

Jon Foell charted 10 points and 12 rebounds to pace St. Mary's. Alec Kestel added five rebounds.

For L-M, Travis Leuer posted 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ryan Stumbo put up a game-high 14 points; Adam Woodin added 10 points. The Chargers shot 40 percent (17-of-42) from the field.

The Panthers are idle tomorrow night.
